Canadians May Plant Less Wheat and Canola in 2014

Canadian wheat growers may decrease seeding by 4.8 percent this year and also reduce the amount of canola they plant, according to a government survey.
Canada, the world’s biggest wheat exporter after the U.S., will sow 24.8 million acres of the grain, down from 26.0 million a year earlier, Statistics Canada said today in Ottawa. The average estimate of 12 analysts surveyed by Bloomberg News was 24.3 million acres.
Spring wheat planting may fall 5.6 percent to 18.0 million acres, while durum seeding is forecast to drop 2.6 percent to 4.84 million acres and winter wheat will decline 2.7 percent to 1.95 million acres.
Canola seeding may fall 0.7 percent to 19.8 million acres from 19.9 a year earlier. Analysts in a Bloomberg survey forecast 20.75 million acres. Barley seeding is forecast to drop 10.9 percent while soybean planting may increase 16.5 percent to a record 5.26 million acres, according to the survey.
Statistics Canada said it interviewed about 11,500 farmers between March 24 and March 31.
